OVERVIEW
Bicol Cooperative Congress
Over the span of 20 years (held every two years) from 2005-2023, the Bicol Cooperative Congress has become a much-awaited event of cooperatives in the region with the six provinces alternating as hosts.
Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the world over, that caused stoppage to lots of human activities, the scheduled 2021 congress was suspended, and resumed only in 2023.
The reopening of the Bicol congress hosted by Naga City Cooperative Council re-invigorates this prestigious cooperative event with remarkable success and once again inspired cooperatives all over the Bicol region.
The Bicol Region Cooperative Development Council (BRCDC) with its very dynamic and competent leadership -- from past to present-- with determination and diligence has tirelessly given its support to the Bicol congress.
The first regional director of the Cooperative Development Authority in the Bicol Region in 1991, Director Arturo V. Ruiz had initiated the creation of the Bicol Region Cooperative Development Council, getting its initial funding of P358,000 from various cooperatives in the region generated through raffle tickets for its operation.
Since then, the BRCDC with the establishment of cooperative councils at the provincial, city and municipal level, as mandated by Republic Act 11364 s, 2019, initiated by the CDA, the BRCDC as the core of the cooperatives in the region has become the working arm of government in the implementation of programs and projects, with the lower local cooperative councils at its back.
Inspired by the success of the 2023 Bicol regional congress, Sorsogon province, through the effort of the Sorsogon Cooperative Union, had successfully bid for the hosting of this year's congress.
